Your complete perler beads tutorial! 🌈
Everyone knows perler beads… but between the first purchase and the first successful creation, things don't always go smoothly. Beads that flatten, creations that warp, pegboards that deform… We've been there too! 😅
This guide is everything we wish we'd known from the start. A real how-to, with all the answers to your questions! 🙋🏾🧡

1. What are perler beads? 🌈
Perler beads are small colored plastic cylinders placed on a pegboard to form a pattern. Once the pattern is complete, you iron over it — the heat fuses the beads together, and the creation becomes solid and ready to handle. ✨
Simple in theory… and really fun in practice!
2. The right age to start 🌟
The official recommendation is from age 4 — mainly for safety reasons related to the risk of small beads being swallowed.
But in reality, it depends a lot on the child and their fine motor skills. Adam started very young, and some 3-year-olds do great with an adult present. Others will be more comfortable at 5 or 6. It really varies! 😊
The real risk is swallowing. Midi beads measure 5mm — small but not tiny. With supervision and by putting the beads away after each session, the activity is perfectly safe for families with young children. Never leave a very young child alone with the beads, and be mindful if you have babies in the house. 🍼
Hama beads are made from non-toxic plastic. If swallowed, consult your doctor or poison control center as a precaution — but rest assured, the toxicological risk is low. The real danger is choking in very young children. ⚠️
3. Choosing the right beads brand 💛
The go-to brand in Europe is Hama — a Danish brand that invented the ironing technique back in the late 70s. Other brands exist — Perler in the US, Artkal in Asia — but we stick with Hama: consistent quality, true colors, and easy to find everywhere. 🇩🇰
PYSSLA beads are compatible with Hama Midi pegboards. They're cheaper, but quality and colors are less consistent. Fine for getting started — but for neater creations, we prefer to stick with Hama. 😊
Technically yes, but with caution. A slight size difference between brands can create uneven fusing. Best to stick with one brand — or test on a small pattern first.
Yes! Hama has launched bio beads made from sugarcane byproducts — carbon neutral, recyclable, and compatible with all existing Hama pegboards. Available in 15 colors and can even be mixed with your regular fuse beads. (#Ad #Amazon) 🌱
4. Choosing the right beads size 📏
There are three sizes — and they're not compatible with each other. This is where a lot of people get confused at first!
- Maxi (10mm) → from age 3, large and easy to handle 👶
- Midi (5mm) → the most common, from age 4-5, perfect for most patterns ✅
- Mini (2.5mm) → for older kids and adults, best used with tweezers 🔬
Our pick: start with Midi beads. They're the ideal size for kids and adults alike, from age 3 and up — and all our patterns are designed for this size.
5. What you'll need to get started 🛍️
No need to break the bank! Here's the essentials to get going.

A set of Hama Midi beads (#Ad #Amazon) — a big set goes a long way and won't cost much. Consistent colors, even fusing — Hama is just reliable like that. 🎨

A standard square pegboard (#Ad #Amazon) — the most versatile option to kick things off. Got a big project? Clip a few together!

Tweezers (#Ad #Amazon) — not a must-have at first, but little hands will thank you for them. Way easier to fix a wrong bead! 🤏
Baking paper — hands down my top tip! Skip the special fuse beads paper. Regular baking paper from your kitchen does exactly the same job for way less. ✅
An iron — yours is perfect. But if your kid wants their very own crafting iron, there are mini irons made just for fuse beads — smaller, easier to handle, and honestly adorable. (#Ad #Amazon) 😄
You can also grab a starter kit to get going. These packs usually come with loads of extras for your creations! 👉 Find all our favorite supplies on: My supplies.
Little fingers are the best tools, full stop! 🖐️ That's exactly the fine motor work that helps kids develop coordination and dexterity. Tweezers can help the youngest ones get started, but don't overthink the gadgets — that's half the fun.
A storage box (#Ad #Amazon) is a total game-changer. Sort by color from day one — you'll save yourself so much time every session. One compartment per color family and you're golden! 🌈 We love this one: the standard bag (1000 beads) fits perfectly in the drawer!
6. Your perler beads how-to, step by step 📋
Step 1: pick and print your pattern
All our patterns are available as actual size PDFs. Print at 100%, no scaling — and make sure 'fit to page' is unchecked. 🖨️ That's what keeps the grid perfectly aligned with your pegboard pegs. Cut out your pattern and you're good to go! ✂️

Absolutely! Once kids get the hang of it, going freestyle directly on the pegboard is where the real magic happens — and the best surprises come from. 🎨
Step 2: place your beads
Pop your transparent pegboard right on top of the printed pattern. You can see the grid through it — no counting, no memorizing! ✨ We love sticking the pattern under the board with a small piece of reusable adhesive. Stops it from sliding mid-session.
Place your fuse beads one by one on the pegs, following your pattern colors. Take your time — this is the zen part! 😌
Work on a flat, stable surface and try not to move the board once the beads are placed. Need to take a break? Just leave it flat — beads will stay put until you're back. 👍
7. All your ironing questions, answered! 🔥
Ironing is for adults only — always. Hot iron, sticky beads, one second of distraction… you get the picture. 🙏
Lay the baking paper flat over your pattern. Iron over it using slow, circular movements — no pressing hard.
Every iron is different, so there's no magic setting. Start at medium heat, test on a few beads in the corner, and adjust from there. Beads should melt and fuse without completely flattening — the center hole should close a little, but still be visible. 👀
🚫 Nope! Steam is the enemy of fuse beads. It causes stains and warping. Always switch off the steam function before you start.
Iron's too hot or you're pressing too hard. Lower the heat or move faster and lighter.
Not hot enough, or you moved too fast. Turn up the heat a little and iron a bit longer.
Plain baking paper from your kitchen — no need for anything fancy. It handles the heat well and peels right off without damaging your beads. ✅
Too much heat or too much pressure. Keep those circular movements going — never stay in one spot too long. ⚠️
Same as a single board — circular motions, baking paper covering the whole surface. Take extra care over the joins so everything fuses evenly.
Hama has had their products independently tested — no danger under normal conditions. That said, we always recommend ironing with a window open. Fresh air never hurts! 🌬️
8. Getting your creation off the pegboard 💪
This is the part that makes people nervous… but honestly? It's easy once you know the trick!
Once ironed, gently flip your pegboard face-down on the table — beads underneath. Wait about a minute. I sometimes pop a heavy book on top to keep everything flat while it cools. 📚
Then gently peel the board away from one corner. Your creation stays on the table, perfectly flat and solid. ✨
Probably peeled too soon or too fast. Place it flat under a heavy book while it's still slightly warm — it usually settles right back into shape. 👍
Not necessary! One side ironed through the baking paper is plenty for a solid creation. Ironing the back adds rigidity but flattens the bead texture — totally your call.
Hang them as keychains, display them on a shelf, give them as handmade gifts, string them into a garland… Once ironed, they last forever. The possibilities are endless! 🌟
9. Ready to create? Let's go! 🎨
A great first pattern means few colors, a recognizable shape and a quick win. The goal? Finish it, love it, and want to make another one straight away!
